Catherine Foreman Gray, Cherokee Nation History and Preservation Officer, will be giving a history presentation on the Treaty of New Echota during the June 22 community meeting of the Cherokees of Central Florida.

Negotiated in 1835 by a minority party of Cherokees, challenged by the majority of the Cherokee people and their elected government, the Treaty of New Echota was used by the United States to justify the forced removal of the Cherokees from their southeastern ancestral homelands along what became known as the Trail of Tears.

Presentation will take place on Saturday, June 22, 2019, in conjunction with the Cherokees of Central Florida community meeting beginning at 10:00am at The Classroom at Moccasin Lake Nature Park, located at 2750 Park Trail Ln., Clearwater, FL. The event will also include a potluck lunch, *details below.
